The True Story of Elisa Lam And The Cecil Hotel

For years the Cecil Hotel has been the hotel of nightmares, from ghost stories to bad residents, it's not a premier hotel that guests are dying to stay at. However, no story is more daunting than that of Elisa Lam who sent shock waves through the media. Elisa's disappearance was so shocking that there was even a Netflix documentary made from the story. If you have been living under a rock and still don't know the story or just want more details about it, then read through this gallery and find out more about the Cecil Hotel and its many secrets and conspiracies.
The story of Elisa Lam and the Cecil Hotel
In January 2013, a curious event happened at the Cecil Hotel. Elisa Lam, a Canadian college student checked into the downtown Los Angeles hotel and was supposed to be there for three nights.

Once she arrived at the hotel, however, her known activity became limited but we do know that she was lodged in a shared room at first before she moved to a single one. Next, she visited a bookstore and went back to the hotel, which was the last time anyone saw her as she simply vanished.
A curious case indeed
Allegations of a conspiracy emerged on the internet regarding the case but before we jump to conclusions, it is crucial to examine the background of the Cecil Hotel itself. The Hotel is quite famous, and in 2013, the Cecil Hotel rightly got a lot of attention from the media after Elisa Lam was found dead there.

Apparently, the hotel has a long-standing history of tragic occurrences, mystery, and crime. Thanks to the fact that Elisa Lam’s tragic death happened at a hotel with such a reputation, conspiracies were always going to emerge.
Pop culture fame
The Los Angeles hotel has been famous in pop culture for a while now, and it was the inspiration for the fifth season of American Horror Story, the 1991 movie Barton Flink, and a host of other TV shows and movies.

The establishment has been impacted by various cultural and social issues since it opened its doors, and while it’s not among the most glamorous lodges in the city, it’s still been famous over the years thanks to the number of people that have found shelter there over the years, and also the caliber of monsters that found temporary shelter there.
The Cecil Hotel was opened in 1927
Even though it has lately become famous for wrongdoings and crime, the Cecil Hotel is an old, longstanding hotel that opened its doors all the way back in 1927. The construction of the hotel kicked off in 1924, and the establishment was officially opened as a low-budget hotel after three years.

Although it isn’t known for being a super luxurious hotel, the place still features a luxurious marble lobby that was intended as a lavish and comfortable spot for Hollywood tourists and business folks.
The influence of the Great Depression and the Skid Row area
Unfortunately, the Great Depression hit the US two years after the hotel was opened. Looking back at the history of the Cecil Hotel, one can't argue that the Great Depression contributed to the tragedies recorded at the Cecil Hotel.

It didn’t quite help that the hotel was also close to the Skid Row region, which had sprung up during the railroad's construction in the mid-1800s. The combination of its proximity to the skid row area, and the Great Depression meant that the hotel became known for significant criminal activity and violence that defeated the purpose of its existence.
The first death at the Cecil Hotel
In November 1931, about two years into the Great Depression, the first known death at the Cecil Hotel was recorded. This was the case of Percy Ormond Cook, a 57-year-old that shot himself in the head because he couldn’t reconcile with his family.

Since Cook’s suicide death, more than a dozen other deaths have been recorded at the hotel, including murders, overdoses, and more suicides. In that span of increasing violence and harsh economic conditions, the Cecil Hotel faced increased competition from nicer hotels in more suitable regions of Los Angeles, and the establishment suddenly became less enticing.
The place for the luckless
The Cecil was a lush establishment when it first opened its doors but it quickly descended into a place for people who had run out of luck.

The Cecil Hotel would eventually become a single-room occupancy establishment and it transitioned from housing business travelers and tourists to housing long-term tenants that got to rent rooms for themselves, with shared bathrooms for everyone. In that span, the hotel establishment began to fraternize with known criminals that wreaked havoc on the Los Angeles area.
The case of Pigeon Goldie Osgood
As a famous destination for sex workers, drug dealers, drug activities, and people into all sorts of illegal affairs, a significant number of violent crimes were reported at the Cecil Hotel.

One such case was that of Pigeon Goldie Osgood, a retired telemarketer that was found assaulted, beaten, and stabbed to death. To date, her case remains a mystery, and the curious thing is she’d been spotted drinking and having a nice time on the hotel premises a couple of hours before she was found murdered.
The Night Stalker stayed at the Cecil Hotel
Richard Ramirez, also known as the Night Stalker, was a serial killer and deranged individual that terrorized Los Angeles for the better part of a year in the 1980s. He lived on the 14th floor of the Cecil Hotel in that period until he was eventually cornered by residents who’d seen his face in the newspapers in 1985.

Ramirez was arrested and convicted of murder, attempted murder, and multiple counts of sexual assault. The worst part is Ramirez isn’t the only serial killer known to have lived in the Cecil Hotel.
A bloodied serial killer in the hallways
It would eventually be revealed that the Night Stalker would return to the Cecil Hotel after his killing sprees. He’d rip off his bloodied clothes just outside the hotel, and would then proceed to his room in his bloodied underwear with blood on his face and fingers.

Ramirez was spotted by other hotel guests and staff on more than one occasion, but such was the weirdness of how the hotel operated that no one ever stopped him to inquire why he was covered in blood.
Jack Unterweger stayed at the Hotel as well
A couple of years after the Night Stalker’s reign of terror had come to an end, another serial killer checked into the Cecil Hotel. Jack Unterweger checked in there in 1991 after he’d evaded conviction for murder in Austria in 1976.

He would then continue his murdering spree at the Cecil Hotel, where he was alleged to have murdered at least three sex workers. Jack was eventually arrested as well, and he received a life sentence for his vicious crimes.
Inspired by the Night Stalker?
Some say the reason the Austrian serial killer lodged in the Cecil Hotel is because he wished to emulate the Night Stalker’s methods by using the hotel as the base of his killing sprees. However, regardless of his motive for staying there, the fact remains that both serial killers lived in the hotel while committing multiple murders.

He’d escaped Austria to evade arrest but moving to the US didn’t quench his thirst for blood and killing helpless sex workers as he managed to keep being a murderous monster until he was stopped.
It was dubbed the Hotel Death
Long before Elisa Lam turned up dead at the Cecil Hotel, the place wasn’t exactly anyone’s favorite hotel to recommend to travelers because it had experienced a significant amount of violence over the years. As a result of all the unusual occurrences at the hotel, and the number of crimes that had been committed on the premises over the years, it became known as Hotel Death.

Its popularity among tourists and the business class dwindled as it became known for all the wrong things, and there was already plenty of mystery there before Lam’s death.
Insanity within the walls
The Cecil Hotel was known to have insanity within its walls thanks to an unusual guest list that featured murderers, prostitutes, and drug dealers. The hotel has had countless safety issues since it was opened in the 1920s as thousands of 911 calls were made from it over the years.

At one point, an average of 1-3 calls were made from the Cecil per day, and the incidents ranged from guests trying to burn down some hallways to stabbings, domestic abuse and attempted suicides.
Stay on Main
In 2011, a section of the Cecil Hotel became known as Stay on Main, with distinct reception areas during business hours. However, facilities remained shared, and the establishment’s official website was unchanged as thececilhotel.com.

The Cecil Hotel was acquired by Richard Born for $30 million in 2014, and shortly after that, a New York firm called Simon Baron Development purchased a 99-year lease on the establishment. A couple of years after, the hotel was closed for renovation but then the COVID-19 pandemic altered the planned renovations.
Historic-Cultural monument
In 2017, a couple of years after the case of Elisa Lam’s death at the Cecil Hotel, the Los Angeles City Council voted to make the establishment a Historic-Cultural Monument in recognition of the place’s culture.

Despite all the dark history of the Cecil, it remains an iconic early 20th-century American hotel, and its architecture remains one of historic significance even though it frequently alternates between an affordable hotel for travelers and an affordable housing complex for low-income earners.
Elisa Lam was 21 years old
At the time of the tragedy, Elisa Lam was only 21 years old, and she was a college student at the University of British Columbia. We learned from a statement released by the Los Angeles Police Department that the Chinese-Canadian student got into Los Angeles via the Amtrak train from San Diego.

She was on a short trip to the West Coast as a way of unwinding from school stuff and she was supposed to make a final stop at Santa Cruz but she never made it out of Los Angeles.
Elisa Lam checked into the Cecil Hotel in 2013
In January 2013, Elisa Lam arrived at the Cecil Hotel and stayed in the hostel-styled section with a couple of roommates. The hotel would however soon get a bunch of complaints that would then compel her to move into a room where she was all by herself.

On every day of her break, Lam called to check in with her parents but on January 31st, which is the day she was due to check out of the Cecil, she was unreachable and her parents had no choice but to contact the police.
She was declared missing
About five days after she first checked into the Cecil Hotel, she was declared missing. Thanks to the call from Lam’s parents, the LAPD were alerted of the situation, and they quickly swung into action by visiting the hotel and doing a functional check of its surroundings with a couple of sniffer dogs.

Some of the places they looked are the room she occupied all by herself, and the rooftop which is where the water tanks were. Unfortunately, the search by LAPD officials yielded nothing and that was that.
Her known activity was limited
During Lam’s short-lived stay at the Cecil Hotel, her known activity was limited. Some of the things we do know are that she changed her room once, visited a bookstore, and then returned to the Cecil Hotel before eventually disappearing for good.

Before she went missing, Lam’s entire belongings had been left behind in her hotel room, including her laptop and clothing. Her room was examined and there appeared to be no signs of forced entry or drug-related objects in her belongings.
The last people to see her alive
For the most part, Lam was usually seen by herself in and around the hotel premises. However, at least one person saw her before she died, and that is Katie Orphan, the owner of the unusually named The Last Bookstore who remembered seeing Lam when she walked into her store to purchase some music and books for her folks back home in Vancouver.

According to reports, Lam’s parents objected to her going on the trip all by herself but they succumbed when she insisted, and as a condition for letting her go, she was compelled to check in with them periodically.
The show in Burbank
In the aftermath of her death, investigators found that Elisa Lam had attended the live taping of a show in Burbank just a couple of days before she disappeared. According to reports, she behaved strangely at that show as well, and she even reportedly sent the show’s host an unusual letter.

Thanks to that unsolicited letter, she was quickly ejected from the show and the building by security officials. This was before she reportedly upset her roommates with her unusual behavior.
Strange behavior in a viral video
Several weeks after Elisa Lam was declared missing, the police searched the hotel premises but there were no leads, and she remained missing. The police couldn’t search every room in the hotel because they needed probable cause to do so.

They would then release the last footage of Lam in the hotel lift, and the video quickly went viral on the internet. Lam appeared to be behaving strangely in the CCTV video as she pressed all the middle panel buttons before jumping in and out of the lift nervously.
She appeared to be talking to someone
At one point in the viral CCTV video released by the police, Elisa appeared to be hiding from an unknown person. At another point in the video, she jumped into the corridor and appeared to be talking to someone, moving her hands like she was holding an intense conversation.

After seeing the video, the question that pops up in everyone’s head is who is it she was talking to, what were they talking about, and what is the link between their conversation, the unusual video, and her eventual disappearance.
The Inexplicable nature of the video
There’s little doubt in the minds of those that have seen the Elisa Lam elevator video that it is somewhat inexplicable and very strange. The nature of the video actually brought a lot of attention to the case across the world as its inexplicable nature made thousands of people curious about what was really happening.

Within a couple of days of its release, the video had gotten millions of hits, and different conspiracies emerged about the various aspects of the events in the elevator.
Escaping an unseen person or hinged on drugs?
In attempting to explain the video’s events, several postulations were made on the internet. Some internet users suggested she was trying to run away from someone but she couldn’t because the doors were held open by them.

Others thought she behaved so strangely because she was hooked on drugs. For other internet users, the fact that the video’s time stamp had been erased suggested that some manipulation had occurred as part of a bigger cover-up between the police and hotel management.
She had a history of mental breakdowns
Among the many possessions found in Lam’s hotel room were her prescription medications which all appeared untouched. According to her sister, she had a history of not taking her medications after she’d been diagnosed with an extreme form of Bipolar Disorder.

In the past, Elisa Lam had suffered episodes in which she’d become delusional, bent on the feeling that she was being chased. During one episode, she even had to be hospitalized and it was apparent she was prone to getting into a psychotic state.
Disorganized thoughts and absence of logic
According to Dr. Judy Ho, a clinical/forensic psychologist interviewed for the Netflix series, Elisa Ham had Bipolar I, which makes individuals occasionally go into a psychotic state in which they’d experience disorganized thoughts, and their logic would fail to make any sense whatsoever.

In that state, fantasy and reality become difficult to separate, and it was apparent that Lam had exhibited disruptive behavior in the hotel since she was moved into another room. Likewise, her behavior in the viral video suggests she was having a breakdown.
Water complaints and a disturbing discovery
A couple of weeks after Lam went missing at the hotel, a bunch of other hotel guests found that their water pressure had gotten low, and the water tasted bad as well. Guests complained that black water came out of their taps, and it had begun to taste funny too so a hotel caretaker was summoned to check the water tanks that lay on the rooftops.

He made the checks on February 19th and found her decomposing body in one of the water tanks. Her body was retrieved from the tank and sent over for an autopsy.
No signs of foul play
Once the autopsy was performed on Lam’s body, it was found that she was naked, but no indication of sexual assault was found on her body. The autopsy identified her cause of death as drowning but did little to douse the tension and all the questions that had emerged in the case.

There was no explanation of how she ended up in the water tank if she was indeed attempting to escape an assault, and why was the cement roof put back in place on the tank lid while she was in there.
Bipolar and suffering from depression
Because the discovery of her body, and the eventual autopsy did little to answer all the questions people had, more speculations emerged in the wake of her autopsy. It was however revealed that she was suffering from depression, and she’d also been diagnosed as a bipolar patient.

Lam was on medication for both of these conditions, and trace amounts of the prescribed drugs for them were found in her body during the autopsy. This indicated that she might have stopped taking her medication before the incident, and might have therefore suffered a psychotic breakdown.
Controversy about the water tank's lid
Looking at the Elisa Lam case, lots of internet rumors and circumstantial evidence contributed to the belief held by many that Lam had been murdered by an unknown person.

One reason in particular that fed those rumors is the rumor that the heavy tank lid was closed when Lam was found in the tank. We know that the lids of tanks like that are usually quite heavy, and would therefore be difficult for someone of her stature to close once she got in so people concluded that her killer shut the tank.
The tank lid was open
Because Lam might have suffered a psychotic episode after she stopped taking her medication, she must have found an open tank and climbed into it by herself in a confused state. That was the story some were telling at least.

It was also revealed by the hotel caretaker that the tank lid was in fact off when he found it, leading to speculation by the coroner that there was no foul play even though her clothes were off. All of this, therefore, indicates that her death was simply an unfortunate accident but the conspiracy theorists online think there was some foul play in her death.
A wrongful death suit was filed
Several months after their daughter’s body was found in a hotel tank, Elisha Lam’s parents, David and Yinna Lam, filed a wrongful death suit against the management of the Cecil Hotel. Their attorney alleged that the hotel ought to have inspected and ensured standards at the hotel, especially those that posed an unreasonable risk of danger to their daughter and other guests.

The suit was fought by the hotel management, who filed a motion to have it dismissed on the grounds that the hotel had no reason to believe someone would be able to get into their water tanks.
Finding her body took considerable effort
As the events at the court progressed, it became apparent that the hotel’s argument wasn’t far-fetched because the man who found her body, Santiago Lopez, described the considerable effort he had to make to find her body.

Lopez took the elevator to the hotel’s 15th floor before having to walk to the roof via the staircase. Next, he had to turn off the rooftop alarm and climb the platform that housed the hotel’s water tanks. Lopez then had to climb a ladder to access the main tank’s top before finding Lam’s body.
Only hotel employees could deactivate the alarm
According to Pedro Tovar, the Chief Engineer of the Cecil Hotel, accessing the rooftop of the hotel, where the tanks can be found is difficult for non-employees because climbing the roof triggers the alarms.

Once the alarms are triggered, only employees of the hotel can deactivate them, and the sound of the alarms typically reaches the hotel’s front desk and the top two floors of the building at the same time. As a result of the fact that the area is difficult for guests to access, the Judge ruled that Lam’s death was unforeseeable.
The Christopher Dorner killing spree interrupted the Elisa Lam investigations
Right in the middle of the Elisa Lam investigation at the Cecil Hotel, LAPD helicopters shined their lights on the hotel roof without finding anything. They were slated to continue their inquiry the next day but then former LAPD officer Christopher Dorner embarked on a 9-day killing spree

This attracted the attention of all nearby police officers and effectively caused the Lam investigations to be stalled. Nearly 2 weeks after Lam had disappeared, Dorner was killed during a standoff with the police.
Access via the fire escape
It was eventually concluded that the tank's heavy lid was open before Lam managed to get in, as it would have been impossible for her to access them if the heavy lid was locked.

The investigators also concluded that she reached the tank through a fire escape, so the security features of the rooftop were effectively evaded. Then for whatever reason, she climbed up the tank through the side ladders and hurled herself in because the lid was open.
Safe hiding spot?
With Lam’s history of mental illness, tendency to not use her medication as directed, and mental breakdowns in which she’d appear to talk to an unknown person, we can conclude that she believed someone was after her that night.

She must have thought she had to escape this unseen assailant, and in a bid to stay safe, she had to find a good hiding spot. This led her to the tanks, which appeared to provide perfect hiding, but then she only realized the danger once she’d hopped in.
The dangers of mental illness
While so many questions remain unanswered about the case of Elisa Lam’s death, one thing that remains crystal clear is the fact that the root cause of it all is her mental illness. The case emphasizes the danger of mental illness, which is really all we can blame for her tragic death.

While the video has given some onlookers enough reason to blame an unknown stalker lurking in the background, one thing we should all take away from her case is that mental illness should be taken seriously.
Similarities to dark water
Dark Water is a 2005 American horror movie that stars Jennifer Connelly. It was adapted from a 2002 Japanese movie of the same name, and in the two movies, a young mother found discolored water coming out of the faucets after moving into a new apartment.

Both the spooky elevator and the unusual water would then lead to the discovery of a body in the water supply of their new apartment building. At the end of the day, the story’s most basic details are quite similar to Elisa Lam’s tale.
The metal musician link
As suspicion mounted in the wake of the discovery of Elisa Lam’s body, a metal musician was suddenly tossed in the middle of the case. Pablo Vergara, also known as Morbid, got the attention of internet sleuths, who looked into his music videos and made some intriguing discoveries.

For one, he’s posted a video in which he described staying at the infamous Cecil Hotel; this caused curious people to look into his music about a drowning and a young lady that was chased and killed. All of this led to speculation that Vergara had left subtle hints to drive home the fact that he had killed her.
He wasn’t even in the US
When all was said and done, the suspicion and resentment that had grown towards Morbid waned off because it was found that he wasn’t even in the US during the timeline of the events that led to Elisa Lam’s death, and the eventual discovery of her body in the water tank.

However, his absence from the country during Lam’s accidental death didn’t stop some onlookers from flagging his social media handles, including his email, Facebook accounts, and YouTube accounts, all of which were eventually deleted.
The LAM-ELISA Test
In what was really nothing more than a coincidence, the city of Los Angeles recorded a tuberculosis outbreak that particularly affected the Skid Row homeless community close to the Cecil Hotel. A test for tuberculosis was rolled out, and it was essentially Elisa Lam’s name written backward.

LAM ELISA, which stands for Lipoarabinomannan Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). The obvious similarity would cause speculation that Elisa was used as some kind of biological weapon, and the fact that the University of British Columbia, which she attended, had a well-known tuberculosis research center didn’t help matters.
No signs of Tuberculosis
Lots of crazy theories surrounded the Elisa Lam case, but few were as remarkable and ludicrous as the tuberculosis one. The proponents of this theory thought Lam was meant to help the government control the population of homeless people

That led people to think that at the end of the day, she was killed because she either wanted to expose the people directing her affairs or simply because she knew too much. However, after an autopsy was conducted on her, no signs of tuberculosis were found.
Other forms of media
Dark Water wasn't the only form of media connected to Lam, the plot of the 2018 horror film Followed features Elisa Lam's case, and it shows the famous elevator footage, but rather than following the story to the letter, the body was found in the hotel basement in this case.

In the movie, the director tried to explain the young lady's behavior by declaring that she was playing a Korean elevator game that involves pressing certain buttons in a specific order to summon all the ghosts in the vicinity.
Evidence was never tested properly
One piece of information that really adds to the speculation of this case is the fact that critical pieces of information, like Lam's rape kit and fingernail kit results, were never posted. This leads people to believe they weren't processed correctly.

There was also a substantial amount of pooling blood in Lam's anal area which is a clear sign of sexual assault, however, this piece of information was quickly ruled out and it was stated that it was due to how much time her body spent in the water.
Her phone was never found
One particular piece of evidence that has yet to be explained is how Elisa's phone was never found. It wasn't on her person when she was found, and although the entire hotel was searched, her phone never came up.

This is also peculiar because Elisa has a Tumblr account that was updated after she had already passed. Tumblr does have a feature that allows posts to self-post if the user has been offline for some time, however, it is still unknown if her Tumblr was updated on its own, or through the theft of her phone.
The mystery remains opened
In the end, the death of Elisa Lam at the Cecil Hotel was officially ruled as an accidental drowning. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner concluded that Lam suffered from bipolar disorder and that her death was likely the result of an accidental drowning, potentially as a result of a manic episode.

Overall, the mystery surrounding the death of Elisa Lam at the Cecil Hotel remains unresolved and continues to be a source of fascination and speculation. This is what led Netflix to release a documentary about the incident, leading to more exposure for the case. Hopefully one day we will be able to get down to the bottom of what really happened, but for now, we need to take the word of the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.
